A New Generation of Winemakers

Creu Celta is made by the McAlindon Family who own Direct Wine Shipments.

For nearly a century three generations of the McAlindon family have been purveyors and importers of wine to the island of Ireland.

There have been a stream of Irish wine families over the past few centuries making wine in Europe and the New World.

In 2003 the McAlindon’s dream to buy their own vineyards and make their own wine became a reality.

The vineyards are found in Priorat (meaning Priory), North Eastern Spain near the Scala Dei Monastry (meaning ‘Ladder to God’).

This area today produces some of Europe’s most inspiring reds.

In the 12th century the Carthusian monks built a priory thus giving the name to the region. It is a very special place and a virtual viticultural paradise.

The McAlindons work with one of Spain’s leading winemakers.  Silvia Puig has made wine with some of the best Spanish wineries including the legendary Vega Sicilia.

When we first conceived of Creu Celta, it was important that we used imagery that had a strong link with our homeland.

The symbol for Creu Celta (meaning ‘Celtic Cross’ in Catalan) is inspired by the exceptional 15th Century High Cross found on Devenish Island in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland.

Creu Celta

Creu Celta offers the full expression of classic Priorat red. Rich, layered and concentrated it has pine, chocolate, cherry, plum and currant notes.

This is underpinned by a typical smoky minerality from aroma to palate.

The wine is fermented in both open top barrels and stainless steel tanks and made mainly from old vines Samso and Garnacha, Syrah and in some vintages a little Merlot. Most vintages are aged in new and one year old French barriques. Sustainable viticulture is used at our vineyard in Salanques, Poboleda, Priorat.

“I really congratulate you on the decision to make a serious wine in a top appellation, rather than just churning out ordinary wine somewhere boring.” (Charles Metcalfe)”

It was bloody good,
I have to say. No joke. Lovely and refreshing. Good acidity and lovely bright fruit.

The Vineyard

Creu Celta comes from Salanques, one of the coolest ‘climats’ in Priorat.

Direct Wine Shipments established their Vineyard in this remarkable region in 2003.

In the 12th century the Carthusian monks built a priory thus giving the name to the region.

This area is a virtual viticultural ‘paradise’ and today produces some of Europe’s most inspiring reds.

Direct Wine Shipments and the McAlindon family are fortunate to work with one of Spain’s leading winemakers.
